01 | Have you photographed at my venue before?
Familiarity with a venue is a genuine advantage. (Not a deal breaker, but it does help!) A photographer who knows where the light falls at 4pm, where the best backdrop spots are, and how the space flows will spend less time exploring and more time capturing your day. Regardless, a great photographer will always scout ahead of time.
Pro tip from our team: If your venue is outdoors — like many of our favorite North Dakota locations — ask specifically about weather backup plans and golden hour timing.

The Key Elements of a Wedding Timeline
02 | Can I see a full gallery from a recent wedding?
Sneak peek galleries are curated to perfection. A full gallery will show you how the photographer handles the in-between moments: the getting-ready chaos, the cocktail hour candids, the not-so-flattering bridesmaid angles. Those images tell you far more about their skill and consistency than a portfolio of their 20 best shots ever taken.
03 | What is your editing style?
While this isn’t something you need to ask outright, you should absolutely research their editing style before booking. Editing style is often what makes one photographer's work feel different from another's. Do they favor warm, film-like tones? Clean and bright? Moody and dark? Make sure their natural style aligns with how you want to remember your day — because heavily filtered images are very hard to undo. Ask for sample edits in different lighting scenarios (outdoor midday, indoor reception, golden hour) so you know what to expect across your full day.
Something we always tell our couples: Don't fall in love with a style that only looks good in one specific season or setting if your wedding will look very different.
04 | What is included in my package, and what costs extra?
Transparency upfront saves enormous frustration later. Ask about the number of hours covered, whether a second shooter is included (And is this important to you?), how many edited images you'll receive, and what the turnaround time is. Also ask about travel fees — especially relevant if you're planning a Medora wedding or a destination celebration — and whether engagement sessions, albums, or prints are part of the package or add-ons.
One thing they will not (and shouldn’t) provide is RAW images. They aren't finished photos—they're large files that require specialized editing software and are intended to give the photographer maximum flexibility during the editing process. A photographer's editing style is a significant part of their artistry and brand, so delivering RAW files would mean handing over unfinished work that doesn't reflect the final product they promise. Instead, you should receive professionally edited, high-resolution images that are ready to print, share, and enjoy.

05 | What happens if you have an emergency on my wedding day?
Life happens. Illness, pregnancy, family emergencies, car accidents — professional photographers should have a backup plan in place. Ask if they have a trusted photographer they'd call in, and whether that person's work is similar in style and quality. Get any contingency plan in writing in the contract.

06 | What rights do I have to my images?
This varies significantly from photographer to photographer. Some grant full print rights immediately. Others retain the right to use your images on social media and in marketing materials. Some restrict printing to specific labs. Make sure you understand exactly what you can and cannot do with your images before signing — especially if privacy matters to you.
07 | How many weddings do you shoot per weekend?
A photographer who shoots two weddings in the same weekend may arrive at yours tired from the night before, or rushing to leave for another event after yours. This doesn't apply to all multi-booking photographers — some manage this very well — but it's worth understanding so you can set realistic expectations and make sure your timeline doesn't put undue pressure on their schedule.
08 | What is your payment and cancellation policy?
Read every line of the contract. Understand the deposit structure, when final payment is due, and what happens if either party needs to cancel. In the era of COVID, many couples learned this the hard way. A reputable photographer will have clear, fair terms — and will be happy to walk you through them without hesitation.

09 | Will you be the one photographing my wedding — or an associate?
Some studios book under a well-known photographer's name but send an associate shooter on the day. There's nothing wrong with associate photographers — some are phenomenal — but it’s important to align expectations so you know what to expect. Are they independent contractors, or employees trained under the lead photographer’s brand?
10 | When do you deliver the final images?
Digital gallery links, USB drives, cloud folders — delivery methods vary. Understand the timeline (industry standard is 6–12 weeks), the format of the files (high resolution JPEG is the most versatile), and how long your gallery link will stay active. Download your images in multiple locations the moment you receive them.
